[IMPORTANT UPDATE >>Don't Use Dreadlock Wax<< ]

A very sticky waxy week indeed. And the weather was HOT during the day (melty head - yuck) and humid during the night (sticky itchy head). The dreadlocks didn’t look quite as bad as they felt, thankfully. I’m sure most people who saw them probably just thought what most people think about most dreads most of the time anyway. I kept up some daily palm-rolling, which made them very long and thin and hard because of all the wax. Had to keep reminding myself that it was a good thing overall because they were being kept firmly together and busily knotting away.

I was still very very happy to have dreads rather than my old hair. Despite the sticky itchings, it was still miles better than having to actually deal with hair on holiday. It’s just that, well, when I said earlier that getting dreadlocks was a bit like getting a new pet, I didn’t mean I wanted to feel like there was an actual creature clinging to my head :P

When we got home on Saturday evening, I discovered that the smell I had assumed was damp tent air on Friday night was my dreads :( The aroma of wet dog loses all its cute nostalgic overtones when it’s coming from your head. I used A LOT of shampoo that night.

Here are some pics from during the second week. The first is from the Wednesday, 2nd July and the other two are from Friday 4th. To the casual glancer, they don’t look so bad, but to the close-up inspector they aren’t so great either…

And now for the pre-wash shots taken on the evening of Saturday 5th July, after a week of sweating, melting, itching, dampness and stinkyness. Kinda get the feeling it’s people like me who go around perpetuating the myth that dreadlocks are dirty and smelly…sorry :(

I’ve kept the images big so you can zoom right in; there are actual bits of dirt in there! Mmmmm :P

Do I need to say it was a big relief to wash my hair that night? I was very thorough indeed. Loads of shampoo, really hot water, and a nice bit of vigourous scratching all over my scalp. Aaaaah, much better :) And here’s the outcome:

Sunday’s maintenance involved some much more cautious product application; just enough to tidy them up.

And that’s the end of my second week with dreadlocks. Fearing the worst, I had expected them to be mostly fallen out and looking crap by now, but was pleased to feel they were actually improving on the whole :)

DREADS RULE!!! :D
