I mentioned a few posts ago that my maintenance routine had mostly disappeared.
In the early days, it seemed like I was having to write off a whole day each time I washed my hair, just to spend on maintenance, making sure my dreads dried in the right sort of shape, and not too many knots were falling out. I know that depending on your attitude towards how dreads should be grown, this could all be regarded as totally unnecessary, but it’s the way I was doing it at the time anyway. So as my dreadlocks started to mature and lock up, it was with some relief that I found I could get away with doing less and less post-wash maintenance, until it eventually trailed off altogether.
It’s easy to become complacent I think, when you first start to really feel the relief of no longer having to deal with your hair. After my past two hair washes, I decided to pick up the maintenance again as a bit of an experiment. About 30-40 minutes thorough palm-rolling whilst my hair was still damp is all I’m talking about here. It really made a difference. My dreads looked much more ordered and mature, and actually felt softer, probably from the hair cuticles getting flattened down a little. A good palm-rolling also gives your dreads a tiny bit of extra length, by stretching them out a little, which is nice for me coz I’m keen for some of my dreadlocks to reach a better tying-back length.
I’m sure palm-rolling increases hair breakage, so go easy on it. I’ve noticed it’s given my root tightness a nice boost, though. All in moderation I guess.
And a bit of common sense
