Finally! :D

When we first made my dreads I still had pink hair from my last dying, but it disappeared very quickly due to the wax and hardcore dread washing stripping it off. I had been dying my hair pink since Feb 2003, and it pretty much felt like my natural hair colour. Obviously after dreading my hair I had to wait until the locks were tight enough to withstand the thorough rinsing that must follow dying. At four months I dyed most of the dreads back to my real natural colour, to tidy up some of the uneven colour tone and reduce the number of bleached dreads that will ultimately need re-bleaching. In fact, I think the knots were secure enough by 2 months or even earlier to withstand all the rinsing, which really was no more severe than all the washing it took to get the wax out.

As more time passed I think I was starting to delay the pinking session. Partly I was really worried about damaging my dreads with the chemicals and causing them to break off. Also I think I kinda forgot how cool the pink is and thought maybe I’d end up looking (even more) stupid (than usual). I tentatively put a little of my leftover Fudge dye on a couple of the dreads, just to see how it would look. And of course, it looked really cool! Yay :D

Very Tentative Pinking

Bit of a revelation really. Just had forgotten that I’m meant to have ridiculous hair colours :P

So that was one worry out of the way. But I was still really concerned about the chemical damage. I’d read in various places about the importance of leaving dye on your dreads for NO LONGER than the time stated on the pack, or else everything would go horribly wrong. I thought I wouldn’t have time to coat all the dreads properly with dye and still leave the last ones dying for long enough before having to rinse the first ones before they all fell out. I went back to this very helpful site which I used before dying those dark portions into my hair: http://www.compunction.org/dyeing.txt where lish of crank@got.net has lots of helpful things to say on the subject:

Following her advice, I ordered one of the veggie dyes by Special Effects, so that I no longer needed to worry about how long the dye was left on etc.

And it went really well :)

Foil-head = not cool :P

As long as you cover everything that you don’t want to dye (I recommend smearing Vaseline all over your face, neck and ears), you can’t really go wrong. Using veg dyes removes all time pressures and fears about not rinsing out every single molecule. And yeh, that’s it. Cool eh?

Yay for PINK dreadlocks!!!  :D
